European Mediation Training for Practitioners of Justice 2017 (EMTPJ 2017)

On 14-25 August, AIA held EMTPJ 2017, an intensive course on cross-border mediation in civil and commercial matters, tailored to cover both theoretical and practical elements of mediation from the European perspective.

In the course of the 11-day training, EMTPJ participants were exposed to different situations and scenarios that are often experienced by professional mediators. This year's course was taught by several specialists, including Mr. Philippe Billiet, Ms. Arina Gorbatyuk, Mr. Bernhard Wisleitner, Mr. Johan Billiet, Mr. Willem Meuwissen, Ms. Barbara Gayse, Ms. Dilyara Nigmatullina and Ms. Anne Witters.

The AIA received very positive feedback from the participants of EMTPJ 2017. This is what Mr. Jan Cornelis (Professor Emeritus at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Senior Adviser at the Brussels Diplomatic Academy) said about the course:

"In a 100+ hour course, teachers shared their mediation expertise with high professionalism, enthusiasm, generosity and humor. Trainees were immersed in theory and practice for 11 days. The sessions were mind-broadening far beyond the primary course subject of Facilitative Mediation and the broader domain of ADR (...). The unanimous enthusiasm of trainees and trainers is rooted in the course set-up itself aiming at (i) acquiring skills through realistic role games, (ii) multiple teachers elucidating the same corpus of course material from different viewpoints, (iii) sharing best practices between trainers and trainees, (iv) confronting different visions and professional ethics. The audience consisted of trainees with heterogeneous professional backgrounds (lawyers, a university student, diplomats, mediators, a university professor in engineering sciences and a CEO of a multinational) and different nationalities (US/UK, Malaysia, Suriname, Lebanon, Albania, Zambia, Belgium and Liberia) – this diversity has united us during 11 days. Although humor was never far away and laughter was resonating through the premises, the temporary ecosystem that emerged during the course was one of eagerness to learn, critical questioning, perseverance to understand the deep concepts and nuances behind mediation and arbitration, as opposed to litigation.(...) Finally, the day of the exam came. Some anxiety, stress, and concentration during the lunch break were clearly noticeable. At the end of the day, the certificates were distributed. The day thereafter, I found 64 messages in the WhatsApp EMTPJ 2017 group and several e-mails were exchanged. EMTPJ 2017 was not only about following a course but also about networking and bringing people together with very different backgrounds but sharing common interests."

The AIA is grateful for all the positive feedback received from EMTPJ 2017 Participants and we are already looking forward to the 2018 edition!
